Many people worldwide immigrate to different countries for compulsory and humanitarian reasons, at the expense of being separated from their hometowns, loved ones, and all their past.
Refugee boat whose engine broke down in the Aegean Sea while trying to reach Italy just last week; She capsized after a towing intervention by the Greek Coast Guard with a speedboat. Unfortunately, 600 refugees, including 100 children and women, disappeared in the waters of the Aegean Sea. Only 104 people were rescued from the boat. The Greek Coast Guard’s accident report does not mention the process of towing the boat. There are allegations that the boat was pushed into Italian territorial waters. It has been determined by the reports of human rights organizations that people froze to death on the Iran-Turkey and Turkey-Ipsala border in winter and were held hostage by gangs without food or water. We strongly condemn the border policies that have turned the Aegean Sea right next to us into a refugee graveyard and all these cases of pushback from land and sea worldwide. The right to life of individuals and of course the right of asylum cannot be violated by the border protection policies of the states.
According to the data in the UNHCR report titled “Global Trends in Forced Displacement 2022”, the number of people forced to leave the country in 2022 reached 46 million. The number of people forcibly displaced within their country is 62.5 million. The majority of this population is displaced in the world, especially due to wars; without a permanent citizen status, being forced to work in uninsured jobs far from many occupational safety and health conditions such as housing, health, and nutrition, experiencing difficulties in accessing the right to health, trying to hold on to life below the poverty line. All states worldwide, especially welfare states, must take common and fair responsibility for this migrant population.
Our country ranks first with the highest number of refugees in the world in terms of immigration population. After the Syrian civil war, the majority of the refugee population in our country is Syrian refugees. In the 12th year of the war, they are still in our country under an uncertain status such as temporary protection, but there is no certainty about where they will live tomorrow. Temporary protection status provides weaker protection day by day.
We have to face the fact that our country is a country on the migration route, both as a transit country and as a destination country, which is the addressee of the refugee population. World wars, climate problems, natural disasters, and epidemics will always reveal the reality of migration. What matters are peaceful foreign policies and migration policies for two-way integration.
