The Pride Flag and Intellectual Property Rights

Pride Parade is held in the last week of June every year, with the participation of all LGBTQ+ communities around the world. The purpose of the events spread throughout June and the march held in the last week is to increase the visibility of the LGBTQ+ community worldwide to strengthen the struggle for rights and solidarity.

The Rainbow flag, the most recognized symbol of LGBTQ+ rights, was designed by LGBTQ+ rights activist and designer Gilbert BAKER. The rainbow flag was first used in the Gay Freedom Parade (San Francisco, 1978. Contrary to the usual, the flag’s designer Gilbert BAKER, has never applied for trademark or copyright protection for the pride flag.

There is a valuable reason why this symbol, used around the world, does not have intellectual property protection; Baker did not trademark the flag’s design, announcing that he designed the flag for everyone and wanted it to remain free for public use. Moreover, he is working with a lawyer to thwart attempts to trademark the flag and keep it available to the public. I hope to see the days when the Pride flag flies freely all over the world!

We must fight together against all kinds of discrimination and marginalization!

Happy Pride Month!
